Frequently Asked Questions
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a grappling based martial art, adapted from Japanese Jiu-Jitsu by the Gracie family, mainly Helio and Carlos Gracie. The Gracie brothers developed a comprehensive fighting system that used technique, timing and leverage, rather than strength and athleticism. Using these principles, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was born as a self-defence martial art, allowing individuals to defeat bigger and stronger opponents.
At Wiley Jiu-Jitsu YYC we follow a "street defence" style, focusing first on building a strong self defence base, standing up and on the ground. We believe in the importance of knowing how to deal against common attacks like punches and headlocks; but we also believe in being a well rounded practitioner in Gi and No Gi.
Come try out a class!
No. You do not need to be in shape before you start. We welcome adults of all fitness levels, and you can begin at any experience level. If you want more one-on-one attention, private classes are available. You can also try a free week to see if it is a good fit.
Trying out your first class? All you need is athletic wear like pants, shorts, and a t-shirt (sleeveless not allowed). We start class with a warm-up, followed by a technical instruction portion, and finish with an optional rolling session. New students will usually review technique at the end; or if they decide to roll, they will only do so with advanced students or instructors who have more control and can help prevent accidental injuries.
If you are new to Jiu-Jitsu, you can try a free week first. If you decide to continue, one of our instructors will explain your pricing options. You can also contact us about private classes and drop-in fees for experienced students.
