How we got
here

Open since 2014, on the Bridgeland border, teaching a self-defence-first style of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Our story

Since 2014

Wiley Jiu-Jitsu YYC started in 2014, when Jeff Wiley moved to Calgary from Regina. Jeff brought years of high-level grappling with him, having earned his black belt in 2006, and the academy has been a Wiley affiliate ever since.

The gym is now led by Pablo Garcia and Sebastian Lopez, both black belts under Jeff. Each brings his own experience and perspective to the mats.

What has stayed constant across that time is the approach. We pride ourselves on strong fundamentals and a self-defence-first style, while still producing practitioners who hold up in competition.

We are a small gym. That is a deliberate choice, not a stage we are trying to grow out of — it is why nobody gets lost at the back of a class of sixty, and why the instructors know what everyone in the room is working on.

What we care about

How we run the room

Self-defence first

Before anything else, you learn to survive bad positions, get back to your feet, and handle the attacks the art was actually built to answer. Everything else is built on that base.

Advanced fundamentals

We believe in being great at a few moves rather than mediocre at a thousand.

Safety is our top priority

We train for longevity and for the love of the art. Train smarter, not harder.

Gi and no-gi both

We train gi and no-gi, on a seasonal pattern — gi through the winter, no-gi through the summer. They teach different things and a complete practitioner does both.

In their words

Wiley Jiu Jitsu is without a doubt one of the best groups of people I have ever spent my time with. They are warm, welcoming and patient, happy to answer any question, drill moves repeatedly and support each other constantly.

Visited Calgary and was looking for a gym to drop in at. Everyone at Wiley was super welcoming, including the members and instructors. It's a clean space with a cool view. Nobody there had an ego or were trying to prove anything. The instructions and class itself was great too, highly recommended!
Santiago Gonzalez · Dropped in while visiting Calgary
I tried this gym while traveling to Calgary for work one week. The coaches Pablo and Seb are excellent, and everyone was extremely welcoming. I would recommend this to anyone, from novices to more experienced practitioners, and I look forward to training with this group again!
